Innovation Fund Grants 2014

Coatham House Projects – Based in Redcar, Coatham House’s latest project is the new Cloud Nine Childcare provision, which is to provide flexible care for children from birth to three years. This will meet demand in one of the most deprived wards in the borough, providing opportunities for children to play and have social experiences. Parents will be able to develop their education or training to promote their employment prospects, knowing their children are safe and happy, as well as developing their knowledge of healthy eating and child development. The relationship with the local college and Job Centre will encourage and support for those with low aspirations and expectations to develop their skills through work placements and training.

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team – The award is needed to provide personal protection equipment for newly-trained members, special rescue and decontamination equipment for other members and those being rescued. The members work closely with Fire and Rescue Services, Coastguards and the Ambulance Hazard Response Team. By developing their skills and capabilities, the organisation is able to commit members to an increasing number of emergency incidents, directly benefitting those in danger but also keeping members safe.

The Island – The charity, based in York, is developing two youth groups to provide space for some of the 80 young people waiting for mentors. These clubs ensure that all young people referred receive effective support and are not left out without any provision when immediate support is vital. Children and young people awaiting a match with a mentor are able to participate in a wide range of positive creative activities and develop social skills and confidence. The groups are needed to support the existing unique project in York, which is already producing demonstrable positive results.
